Gus and John heading up |
A wild day in the Cairngorms to day with strong winds although not the snowfall that was predicted. I was out with Gus and John who where here for an introduction to ski mountaineering course. We met at Mountain Spirit where they hired the gear. Initially things looked a little calmer than forecast and we headed up to the ski area car park where it was apparant that the wild weather was here for the day and headed down to Glenmore to save getting the cars stuck which turned out to be the right choice as the road was shut mid morning. We headed up skinning from the car through the woods and on to the gorge and up to the ski area. Once we headed above the bottom of the ski area the wind and blowing snow was very strong. We made it up to the steepening in the Fiachail Coire Cas and had a look at various skills such as kick turns, pits and some winter skills. We managed almost a full slide back to the cars and through the woods was quite pleasant. The weather looks like it should improve with the week and the later part should provide some nice days.
